You do need to use some sort of wind screen because the 57 picks up all the plosives and such. I went in to the music shop and told the guy I wanted the Sm57 for vocals and he eventually shifted me towards the beta 58 for vocals. It sounds pretty great but the only thing is that I'm getting a lot more plosives than I was expecting and I'm having to use a pop filter. I thought that was only really a problem with condensers. See above but Beta 57's are perfectly respectable vocal mics. TBH any of the mics mentioned in this thread will do a respectable job but some will suit certain voices better than others. I use capacitor vocal mics for most things except 'rock vocals' these days. The purpose of the 57/58 presence peak is to help the vocal 'cut through' a loud.
